                           Vichitra Veena
                               (विचित्र वीणा)

Introduction:

Vichitra veena is also called as Batta veena (बत्ता वीणा); as it is played using a glass slide or shivling stone called as batta.

Earlier it was name as Bramha veena (ब्रम्ह वीणा) but recently it is termed as Vichitra veena due to its unusual style of playing.

Unusual - Vichitra

Description:

Vichitra veena is a fret less instrument played in Hindustani music. It is usually played in the Dhrupad style of music.

Dhrupad is the oldest musical style of India.

Vichitra veena has a very deep, slow and resonating sound as that same of the Rudra veena and therefore it is also used for meditative music.

Construction:

Vichitra veena has a cross bar called as Dand (दण्ड) and resonating bodies called as tumbhas (तुम्बा) and it has a Jawari (जवारी) upon which strings are laid.

Jawari gives life to the sound.

The whole construction of the Vichitra veena is made such that it will give deep, slow sound.

The tumbas on either end of the dand are the dried Gourds which are use as a resonating body.

The ends of the veena are crafted with peacock head of suitable material.

Strings:

Out of many playing strings one is the baaj ki tar (बाजे ची तार); which is the main playing string on which most of the raag is played.

Other 5 strings are set in lower octave one after the other.

Thus Vichitra veena has many octaves that can be played at a time. (Indian Classical Music).

The remaining strings are Chikari strings which are used for producing drone effect.

There are also 13 sympathetic strings that lie underneath the main playing stings to produce sympathetic effect while playing, in all there are 22 strings in Vichitra veena.

Playing Difficulties :

As there are no frets to guide the swar sur or notes one has to be tandem while playing.

A slight mistake can disturb the whole raag.

Therefore it becomes very important for a player to have good knowledge of sur, swar or notes before he she plays Vichitra veena; it is one of the reason why it is a rarest musical instrument being played today.

The other reason may be its low and deep sound.

I made to decide playing this instrument and not let it be rare any more and that is one of the reason why I have introduced you all to this instrument today.
